Imagery: Provide guidelines on the style and tone of visuals that align with your brand including photography style, illustration type, icons, and image treatments. Consistent imagery helps create a unified visual identity and emotional connection with your audience. • You Need a Website Roadmap (What is a Sitemap)
A sitemap is a vital tool in website development, providing a visual representation of the site’s structure and organization. It acts as a roadmap, outlining all the pages, sections, and links within the website. A sitemap is a planning tool that guides both design and navigation decisions, ensuring all content is accounted for before construction begins. By mapping out the website’s layout, a sitemap shows how each page connects to others, helping establish a logical navigational flow that benefits both users and search engines. A sitemap also helps visualize the number of pages required and identify areas where the site might become confusing or difficult to navigate. A good rule of thumb is to limit the main navigation elements to 5-7, and have other elements exist as a sub navigational page, ensuring a clean, intuitive experience. The following list outlines key strategies for organizing pages in a way that enhances usability, ensures logical flow, and maintains clarity for users. List primary (main) and secondary (sub) pages Organize pages by importance (main pages at the top, sub pages below) Create a navigational flow that makes sense (to the user!) Group related pages together to show clear relationships Connect pages clearly to show navigation flow Keep the design simple and easy to understand by all involved Use minimal text, focusing on the structure In conclusion, a sitemap enhances website development by ensuring that content is organized, indexed, and easy to navigate—improving the user experience and helping search engines efficiently navigate the website. For Meyers Design, Inc., having a sitemap is also an essential part of our website estimating process. Unlike a brochure with a fixed page count, a website can be endless, making careful planning critical.
  • The Banana Theory (Guide the Viewer)
The Banana Theory suggests thinking outside the box to find innovative solutions to complex concepts. Applying creativity in your design can lead to effective and unique results. Just as a banana might stand out in a fruit bowl or used creatively in different culinary context. The simplicity of The Banana Theory focuses on the core message to avoid complicating your message. The same way a speed readers eye is able to skip over what’s irrelevant to find the pertinent information, a designer can strategically guide the viewer’s eye across a page using The Banana Theory or a series of bananas. Imagine the viewer as a monkey drawn to bananas—key elements such as company name, contact information, and important details are the bananas. By utilizing colors, lines, fonts at varying sizes and weights you can emphasizes focal points while creating a clear visual hierarchy, guiding the viewer’s attention throughout the design. The Banana Theory highlights the power of simplicity and creativity in various fields. A correct application of The Banana Theory can lead to improved comprehension and enhancement of the audience’s engagement.
  • Understaning Image Extensions (JPG vs. PNG vs. EPS, etc)
Each image extension serves specific needs. When selecting the proper file format the following factors should be considered: Purpose Compatibility Quality JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group The primary advantage of using JPEG (also known as JPG) files is its reduced file size, which also happens to be its weakness, because data is lost during compression. A compressed image means that when the file is created colors or values that are similar are averaged out and combined. This creates a smaller file, but you lose some data in the image, resulting in lower quality. JPEG files have a solid opaque background. JPEG files should be applied to electronic media only. PNG: Portable Network Graphics PNG files offer the capability to be saved with a transparent background, crucial for seamless integration over background colors, patterns, or images. When using a PNG format, no data is lost during compression, making PNGs ideal for detailed graphics, charts, and websites. PNG files should be applied to electronic media only. EPS: Encapsulated PostScript EPS files are preferred in desktop publishing so designers can include complex artwork and detailed graphics. Despite newer formats like PDFs gaining popularity, EPS remains an industry standard, valued for its compatibility with most systems and software. EPS format is commonly vector based meaning it uses mathematical equations to define shapes and lines rather than pixels-based graphics, allowing it to be scaled up or down without losing clarity or detail. EPS files should be applied to files that will eventually be printed. TIFF: Tagged Image File Format TIFF images are primarily used when high quality images are needed for publishing, photo editing, and graphic design. TIFFs are a very high image quality with a larger file size which is why they are not well suited for websites. No matter how often you open, save, or resize a TIFF file, the quality is maintained. TIFF files should be applied to files that will eventually be printed. PDF: Portable Document Format PDF is the industry standard for exact document replication, preserving layout, imagery, fonts, and color palette across various operating systems without needing the original software or fonts. PDFs are often used when avoiding any modification but needs to be easily shared. They can be saved as a low-resolution file size to be easily stored, transferred, and downloaded. They can also be saved at a high-resolution file size to be printed.
  • The Golden Rule
Effective design hinges on simplicity. Utilize clear and concise messaging, a limited font and color palette, and avoid a cluttered layout. Keep it simple but be consistent when managing multiple project components (e.g., postcards, flyers, websites) or comprehensive projects (e.g., brochures, books, websites); maintain uniformity in fonts, spacing, colors, and imagery. Often, less is more. After finalizing your design, evaluate what can be removed without compromising the message or emotion conveyed. Good design often thrives on what isn’t present rather than what is. Incorporating ample blank (white) space in your design allows the audience to focus on the core message without distractions. Amidst our bustling world, minimalist designs provide a tranquil focal point for viewers, capturing attention and evoking a sense of calm. Directness and brevity are advantageous; minimize text and use subheadings to break up longer passages. Viewers’ attention spans are fleeting, so clarity and conciseness are paramount. Keep it simple.
  • How Often Should a Website be Updated
The best answer is as often as needed. Ask yourself... • is the content outdated • is the appearance of your website outdated • is it mobile capable • do you think it should be getting more traffic • does it have broken elements and/or links • is it users friendly • is it secure Minor updates may occur daily, product or service updates might only occur as needed, while a comprehensive website overhaul might happen every couple of years. The frequency of updates should reflect the need for fresh or updated content, user-friendly functionality, current security updates, and user engagement. Keeping your website fresh helps it rank higher within search engines and keeps the website secure. The key is to strike a balance between keeping your website current and not overwhelming your audience with too many changes. Regular updates demonstrate your commitment to your audience and can improve user engagement and search engine rankings. Here are a few guidelines to assist you. Content Updates: Content should be updated regularly to keep information current and relevant (e.g., daily or weekly) or periodically (e.g., monthly or quarterly) to reflect changes in products, services, or achievements. Design and Functionality: Website design trends evolve, and technological advancements can make certain features outdated. Updating the design and functionality of your website should occur every 1-2 years to ensure it remains user-friendly and visually appealing. Technical Updates: Keep the website software, plugins, and security features updated regularly to ensure functionality and security. This might involve updates every few weeks or months, depending on the platform. Critical security updates should be applied as soon as they are available to protect against broken links and vulnerabilities. Appearance Updates: Refreshing the design or layout of the website can be done periodically to keep it visually appealing and aligned with current design trends. This could be done bi-annually or annually, depending on the need and budget. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Updates: Monitor and update SEO strategies, keywords, and meta tags periodically to improve search engine visibility and rankings. User Feedback and Analytics: Incorporate user feedback and analytic data to identify areas for improvement and update accordingly. Industry Standards: Some industries have more frequent updates due to regulatory changes, technology advancements, or simply competitive reasons. Keep informed about what competitors are doing and what is expected in your industry. In conclusion, there are several ways to keep your website updated. By adding new content, updating existing content, and making design changes as needed, you can ensure that your site is always fresh and relevant. Investing in off-page SEO can help drive traffic to your site and improve search engine rankings. So, if you’re looking to improve your website, be sure to keep these tips in mind and put them into practice!

Good design often thrives on what isn’t present rather than what is. Incorporating various design principles in your design enables the audience to focus on the core message without distractions. Impactful graphic designs serve as a focal point, capturing viewers’ attention and laying the foundation for establishing your brand as one they trust. This sure is a lot of information to help you keep your message short. I'll take my own advise and say That's All.
  • Take a Moment to Reevaluate
After creating something that meets project guidelines, step back and take a break. Returning with a fresh perspective, assess your design quality objectively. If it still meets your initial expectations, you likely have a winner. If not, identify where it falls short of the guidelines and make necessary adjustments—it may still be salvageable. Stopping to take a second look helps ensure your final output is effective and polished. It provides another opportunity to catch mistakes including alignment oversights, color discrepancies, formatting errors, and typographical mistakes. Evaluate if the message is clear and effectively communicated. Then review to improve aesthetics making sure your design is visually balanced, pleasing to the eye, and on brand.
  • Keep Records and Capture Inspiration
Maintaining a library of creative ideas can be invaluable. Keep a notebook handy to jot down or sketch design concepts as you see them. When encountering compelling designs, use your phone camera to capture them along with personal notes on why you found it inspiring. Designers should keep ideas for a variety of reasons: • Creativity Boost/Inspiration • Trend Awareness • Problem-Solving • Personal Style Development • Resource for Projects • Client Communication • Motivation and Encouragement • Learning and Growth Over time, you’ll compile a collection categorized by themes like smart logos, effective color combinations, compelling headlines, and innovative font usage. Even if you don’t immediately use these ideas, they can serve as future inspiration. Keeping a collection of inspiring ideas will become a valuable practice helping designers creative process, professional growth and product success.
  • Utilize White Space Effectively
Embrace the principle that less can be a more effective design. Avoid overloading your design with excessive colors, fonts, or elements. White space has many advantages. It prevents clutter resulting in other elements to stand out and text easier to read. It allows your reader to focus on key elements by providing space around items of importance. White space creates aesthetic appeal by giving your design a more professional appearance resulting in a stronger brand message. If properly used, white space helps establish a clear visual hierarchy helping to guide the viewers through content. Strategic use of white space plays a vital role in enhancing readability, improving aesthetics, and focusing attention. Thoughtful use of white space creates marketing materials that are effective, engaging, and align with the brand.
